Joe's Laptop - A Warning
Seems security is gone even further to the dogs in the Foundation, as even using a security chain can now be circumvented by sheer brute force when it comes to the Laptop thieves that are prowling UL.
As Mike already asked the question, how long before UL refuses to spend project monies on laptops due to the increasing number of thefts from around the campus. It'd be nice if they added proper locks and security access to the areas in question first, but sure its UL and they'll probably take the wrong course again without consulting any of the locals.
Thankfully for my friend Joe, his laptop was recovered due to the quick witted nature of another colleague and Campus Security was alerted but this case is definitely the exception rather than the rule.

All credit to the Gardai for recovering the laptop. While more campus security might look good, more professional Gardai would be more effective imho.
As for laptops - if they should not be bought using project funds, why should they be bought by any company?
Removing laptops would not solve the broader question of security on campus. Wallets, monitors, and anything of value could be swiped.
Over the past number of weeks I have met lots of people who have been robbed at home, had their cars damaged or burned out. Again, it is Gardai and tackling the root of crime that will help

Given I can remember attending the meeting about 8 years ago when Willie O'Dea promised a new garda station for Castletroy and for UL, I'm not going to hold my breath but it would solve the problem if there was a local garda presence which was based in the area and had a connection to the area.
However it is still the lax attitude of buildings and of security in UL which is contributing to the current issue on Campus. Until these departments actually get out of their lofty towers and start to give a cent or two about the welfare for the ordinary denizens of UL, nothing will change. Increasing the Garda in Castletroy is still a retro rather than a proactive measure when dealing with this particular set of crimes.

The problem with the Foundation Building is design - e.i. architecture. The problems in the Foundation are propagated throught campus. If you want to, you can go into amazing labs and nick 10,000 euros worth of gear in no time, any day.
